Dear Namibians,
your Nation will turn 20 this week, 20 years of Independence, a country reaching maturity? What do you think about it? What are your opinions about being Namibian? Will you join the celebrations on the 21st in Windhoek, do you celebrate at all? What does this day mean to you?
I am a student of social anthropology from Germany and I`m very much interested in getting to know your ideas and views about Independence and life in present day Namibia. Post replies or feel free to answer me: namibia_at_20@yahoo.de
Your answers will be highly appreciated!

Thanx Good-win
this is a very relevant issue indeed. However I will not join this so-called celebration which will coincide with the swearing in of our Lame duck president for the second term, simply because there is nothing to celebrate. how can I celebrate when our Unemployment rate stands at 50%? how can i celebrate when more than 400000 Namibians are starving?, how can i celebrate when the crime rate in our country is alarmingly high? how can i celebrate when corruption by the well connected professional kleptomaniacs is the order of the day? how can i celebrate when the former oppressed are now oppressors? how can i celebrate when Democracy have been replaced by Demo-crazy? what is there to celebrate anyway? how can i celebrate when our education sector is in chaos and our health sector in crisis?

I am very proud of Namibia right now. We have the best two universities and most of the school are equipped. I cannot wait for the ideas of colleges of education to be part of UNAM so we can shape quality teachers than in the past. We started to train our own doctors and that again deserves an applause.

I will not join this celebration either.
While i realise vividly that Namibia has won the liberation struggle, therefore leading to Independence,,, my reasons for celebrating are less..
We still have a lot to do,,, We could have achieved more than this in 20 years.
Here are my reasons for not being able to stand up proudly and announce to the world about tis independence:
1. namibia is ranked among the most unequal countries
2. Our justice is failing us
3. Unemployment,, instead of reducing it, our government has chosen to rather increase it, Mawe me....

Less was achieved in 20 years.
There are few projects that were initiated by GRN that one can say, thanks to them,, but in totality, i would rank our GRN at 35% success rate.

on his list we have lost too many lives to diseases espcly AIDS.
we have seen beer production gone to another level while food shortage persists
now they're making a celebration party where Whk lager and food will be free
i dont like free. i hate donations
I CANT CELEBRATE 20 YRS OF AIDS. CORRUPTION AND BAD EDUCATION SYSTEM

I won't celebrate it either, in fact I will join the parade for its independence for selfish reason, because the people in power has been inefficient and selfish towards making Namibia a prosperous Nation within a such a long period, we had and still have the resources and mission statement on paper but they do Not benefit our people.
Our people are Hungry, they have no shelter, so I'd rather join the parade for my own selfish reasons, that is of getting a free t'shirt, free food if there's any.
Its saddening to see the almost impossible road my nation has to travel within a limited time to 2030. We may never find people who really care and have the decency of not Eating the little money that the esteemed citizen contributed through tax.
Once again I won't celebrate but would capitalize on whatever gift comes my way, Our people has lost to AIDS, Corruption is grown in our leaders backyard, I just hope the Web.com.na nation with other concerned citizens grow fast enough to save a Nation on a verge of an Artificial Earthquake.

Wow!! It isinteresting to see most of the replies suggest the government has not done anything. However, when you have a look at the last election results. we put the same government in power again for the next five years. Some did not vote that leaves other people to decide your future government. Am not a great fan of the government considering that everything to me seems to be going from better to worse. The only good things the givernemnt is doing is for the elite, making sure they benefit from any programs meant for the poor. No wonder people maybe are still voting for them so that in future they may find themselves in the same position so that they continue the corruption of the day. The Education is had become bad, land redistribution starts with the elite, the poor gets have to be overcrowded on small infertile land, fishing quotas and mining licences are bulldozed even there environmental concern regarding a mining project.....Wow, have got nothing to celebrate.
Namibia is rich in natural resources, with our small population, the least we can do is to have a free primary and secondary education system, we can afford that for sure. Why should we be celebrating the independence while stuck in who fought for what. We are in interested in what we have achieved as a nation as well as how the livehood of our people has improved in terms of water access, improved health system, minimal gap between the poor and rich........Anyway, its a trend in most African state to become greed once they take power.

What I think about it?
Its quite good, and one should be proud ofcourse.
On this day alot is going to happen, celebration of 20 years annivesary, the president will be sworn for the second time and he is going to appoint his cabinet.I have a fear for this,im afraid the same people who have failed us as a nation are going to lead again and we dnt have a say about it. I am afraid that it wont be a celebration bt the begining of war(wit election results at hand its quite discusting).
My opinions being a Namibian
I am proudly Namibian. I feel good to be in this country where I can sleep and walk at night.I am proud of the so many open minded people that we have in our country, and my wish is that opportunities should be given to them so that they can transform Nambia and take it to greater heights. I want our leaders to start addressing issues facing the country at the moment and in future and not things of the past.
Will I join the celebration?
I dont think so,I better do my laundry, sleep and visit friends. Its quite a nice long weend. In the past I use to but not now that we have so many problems as a country then good stuffs. I dnt celebrate failure!
What does it means to me?
Nothing at all,my country is still Namibia, I will be having the same president for the next five years. 20 years of independence hmmm....not economically.
The untouchable...Babe/Cute!!!!!

I think, to me there is a lot to celebrate that the GRN have done, although not necessarly that I will go to the gathering celebration place do to my personal reasons, but usual use to go there.
The following are some of the few things that I may salute the GRN for:
1. my village have access to clean and portable water
2. People closer to me whom I know HIV positve are on ARV and make progress in life and continue cntributing positively to the country's economy
3. Medical school and heart surgery is in the country now
4. roughly, more than15% if not 20% Namibian are qualified professional from our own institution of high learning
5. Out of 5 people (youth) in my village 3 of them are grade 12 graduate, before independence it was 1 ouf of 10.
6. 45% of women are in high position or leadership compared to 5% at before independence (its my own rating)
Just to mention but a few.
IF CORRUPTION, GREED ETC AMONG THE PEOPLE OF NAMIBIA BECAME THINGS OF THE PAST AND GRN STAFF BECOME GOOD IMPLMENTOR OF GOO PLAN PROJECTS INSTEAD JUST GOOD PLANNERS, THEN THE LAND OF THE BRAVE WILL PROSPER IN FUTURE.

Namibia at 20: I would celebrate for many reasons.
I would thank god for keeping our country peaceful for the previous 20 years. Although our leaders tend to be among the most cruel animals around the world with death threats and tribalism remarks being levelled against some of our country's citizens.
I would celebrate that our country has the best road network in africa.
I would celebrate that our GDP is growing annually and new projects have been introduced by our government which will undoubtedly accellerate the growth of our economy.
I would celebrate that 80 percent of namibian students, particularly polytechnic students have laptops with access to the internet owing to the government sponsorship and to some of our parastatals.
I would celebrate that our tourism industry is on top of its game.
I would celebrate that our namibian population has once again voted for the party for life.
Corruption and inequalities should be the main target 4 the next term.

Thanks to everyone who has answered so far!
It`s quite a number of serious issues you raise. I see that you make a clear distinction between the symbolic value of being independent and the more pressing issues of unemployment, corruption and economic independence. I also see that you are eager to speak your mind about the things which are not working out in your country, which is a very positive thing. I suppose most of you are young (i am 29), so these issues of course are the ones really relevant for you, for your future. Do you think this is a generational thing? That the ones celebrating are those who fought and struggled for independence, but that its actually the youth who has to take the lead to achieve real independence?

Goodwin
real independance will only be achieved when true democracy becomes a reality unfortunately what has happened in namibia is that one elite was replaced by another, at present there is no democracy here as there is no balance of power without balance of power all the social ills, explained above will prevail, yes alot has been done in the last 20 years but for this day and age the last 20 years have been a waste we could have done so much more if the right people had been allocated the right positions within GRN, the comrade factor plays a big role in the development of a country if you have incompetence at the highest level of Grn then we are state that is doomed to fail.

I think the day worth a quiet reasonable celebration, as we commemmorate the freedom we got at last from our oppressors,This day brought such a relief to many as the brutalities and apartheid practises they have lived under for more than 60 years came to an end.
In my own opinion my country namibia and its goverment, within the last 20 years, has accomplished numerous development projects aimed at important components of economic growth and independence, despite the many challenges some of which the leaders ve individually/ mutually created i.e corruption.
On the contrary i believe a lot culd ve been achieved with the resources at hand taking into consideration the small population scattering our lovely land. Ineqality in income distrubition ( a 0.70 GINI COEFICIENT out 1 for a developing country is just way toooo high) and greedy are the major factors that are drowning namibia into extreme poverty and i urge this to be the center of attention for the next five years.
4 me thanks to the long weekend of resting, will ofcoarse stay tuned on NBC.............long live Nam.

Goodwin, what do you wanna achieve with your study? Most of you europeans dont give a **** about africa, or dont know what is going on!
There was no struggle for independence. It was a process, repeated all over africa, that came to its conclusion. Swapo had nothing to do with it. Anyways, it was before my time.
What we have now is a lot of illiterate black ****s running the country, after "winning" elections they had to cheat to win. Blacks are unemployed, whites are unemployed, and government gives all the large tenders to the chineese.
I am a "born free" white namibian, and as a consequence have to face all the racism of my government, even if I am / was no part of the colonial past. My black schoolmates, who did not do nearly as well as I did in school, get bursaries, and jobs, not me! I am victimised for being white!!
Go back home, and tell your university lecturers/girlfriend/politicians/whoever that we, the Born "Free" whites in namibia had enough opression by stupid black ****s YOU put in power.
The 21 March 2010 marks the day change begins in namibia. It is an example of how little a government can do in 20 years, yet stay in power because they CHEAT on elections, and because the dumb****s given the chance to vote only vote for them because they - swapo - hate the whites.
Look at my forum name. It represents the way we the young white people feel in namibia. One day we will decide "we had enough" and burn this whole ****ing squatter camp down!!

well Kurt, you`re obviously angry. That makes you somehow equal to many others who replied to my posting so far (and whom I suppose ain`t white). And it definitely wasn`t ME who put "stupid black ****s" in power ( I would remember doing that). In my humble opinion, it was the decline of a senseless regime that came to its logical end. Action and consequence. Just like a system based on corruption will inevitably collapse. Well, that`s my two cents.
But I promise that I will tell the story of the white "Born Frees". You may not share a nation, but a country nonetheless.
PS Since somehow you made my academic self esteem your target: I am in Namibia right now, and not for the first time. It`s a country I enjoy for its people, with a sad eye though, for the burden so many people have to bear. Be they black or white or whatever percentage of pigmentation.

OK, OK, maybe I came down a bit hard on you for something you also had no part in.
What I meant was that we now have a corrupt, cheating, and white hating racist goverment in power because of liberal minded european nations that believed all the shit that was told to them. It is because of their financial and political support we now face the reversed discrimination in namibia. (that is, if i understand what i read in history texts)
Also, most or all studies and documentaries by foreigners in namibia seems to ignore white people. we are seen as "being just here" - not as part of this country. You will never see a report what states that "namibia is fortunate to have all the white small businesses to employ people"
Everybody rather focus on the past.
In prison terms, 20 years is seen as "life" - we have now served our "life" sentence! In school they go to great pains to glorify our constitution that does not discriminate, yet every job I want to apply for says it will give preference to blacks!
I now have to work in my fathers business, doing I job I dont like or have any interest in. My father is a tradesman, and employs 9 people, including my mother and myself. I have 2 younger brothers, aged 15 and 10. What will become of them? We cannot all work for my father!
PLEASE make an effort to talk canditly to whites of my age group. It is in our culture not to complain to other people, but maybe some people will say how they feel. Many may also be scared to say how they feel.
The way I and my friends feel is a growing resentment and hatred. This hatred will grow as policies continue to push us out. Im afraid if this continues for another 10 years, it may grow to a fullscale conflict! Many blacks believe all us whites should be killed. Many of the whites in my agegroup have the sentiment that we should start petrol bombing businesses who advertise jobs as being preferential to blacks. I see some BIG shit coming!!

I am also a born free black namibian who is suffering not only from my own leaders and parents, but by the legacy of your stupid ancestors. I also cant get financial support because my parents don't belong in the elite political and economical structures of the country, however your lazy pink behind has an advantage because you are white and can immigrate to RUSSIA, a racist white country and get a job. Blame your parents for supporting western colonialists who supported apartheid which made it illegal for blacks and WHITES to have a real economical boosting education system under apartheid which could have solved our unemployment issues, because we would be producing our own food, soaps and everything we need instead of giving jobs to south africans. Your parents fought so that South Africa could have political and economical dominance over namibia, now you are paying for their mistakes because we are sucking up to South africa for survival.
When the WESTERN colonialists made deals with the house negroes in South Africa in 1994 not to NATIONALIZE THE MINES WHICH COULD HAVE FUNDED YOUR IGNORANT BEHIND education and ended support for you white boere/afrikaner traitors, you fell into the same hellhole with us. You people need to learn that as White Africans, no one gives a damn about you, not even america. Look at how they dumbed you under apartheid and the APARTHEID CROOKS your parents worked for FLED with billions of LOOT. SO i dont understand how you support western thugs who are the ones enslaving you and i.

How would the Nationalization of SOUTH AFRICAN mines in 1994 have beneifiited "my arrogant behind" in Namibia?? You speak without thinking. You should not listen to your elders. They talk KAK not HISTORY, and they are to stupid to know the difference.
Your lazy black behind has an advantage because you are black and can immigrate to ZIMBABWE, a racist black country and get a job.......

In 1989, ur race planned to extinguish the entire black race in Nam and u neva succeeded. Let the affirmative action take its own cause, they say if u nt happy with the system, pack n leave. N to you german spy, this is Namibia 4 blacks, so cut that shit of calling us ****as or **** back. Your apartheid system was only meant to benefit fellow whites so whats wrong with discrimination against whites, fight back if you can but this is naturally our motherland so get used to the black swagga!

If we control our mines and resources, there would be welfare for us all. look at libya, the only african country that doesnt have western crackers controlling their resources yet have free healthcare, education and a high standard of living for it's people.
If i was white, i would have been in europe making money, but i cant coz im notwhite.u crackers need to stop being lazy gaate.

You still dont explain to me why mines in government hands in South Africa will be to the advantage of students in Namibia?? (Look at your own post. You said it would have been to MY and YOUR advantage if the mines were confiscated in 1994 when Mandela / ANC took power) Or let me put it this way, does the Libyian resources pay for textbooks in Namibia? Or for Healthcare? NO? Then how would the mines in SA contribute?? Dink, man. daai flippen ding bo jou skouers is nie net daar om 'n hoed op te sit nie.
PS: Was'nt it Libya / Muammar Khadafi who financed certain international terrorists, including those ones who blew up the CIVILIAN airliner (BAA) over Lockerbie, Scotland? Nice fellas you idolise.

I said most of the crackers in this country are against US,not swapo or RDP to be in control of our resources. Our leaders might scream imperialism, white colonialists, but the fact remains that the money that is looted from this country ends up IN WHITE BANKS.
The lockerbie bombing was carried out by the apartheid regime. remember general malan, pik botha, CIA and other american personeeels declined to board the aircraft.WHY did they bomb it? Because Bernt Carlsson was on that plane, he was hated by the boere/afrikaaners.
NUMBER 1 terrorist in the world is the USA ruled by whites. USA funded-supported saddam, taliban,al-quaeda. the didnt give a damn that these were terrorists,as long as they were puppets for oil and military corps of the USA. when this guys refused to beg down to USA they were all of the sudden terrorists. SADDAM killed millions of iranians-iraqis-kurds together when he was a puppet of the white british-americans, yet when he turned against them, he was a genocist.
even the dead ex taliban leader who got killed bu US airstrikes, QARI ZAINUDDIN admitted that america supplied him with weapons.

Why would Malan and Pik Botha fly on a commerciaql flight. They also had a Presidential Jet, you know...
According to the internet there were 5 CIA officers on board. Maybe THEY were the target of the Libyans. They were all killed.
I think it was just a random flight that was selected.
I will add a fiew quotes for you to read. Where do you guys get all the crap info you toss around from?
"It is unlikely that he was a target as the political scene in Southern Africa was moving inexorably towards its present state....I discounted the theory as being almost totally beyond the realms of feasibility" (about Bernt Carlsson)
"Pan Am Flight 103 was Pan American World Airways' third daily scheduled transatlantic flight from London's Heathrow Airport to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. On Wednesday 21 December 1988, the aircraft flying this route—a Boeing 747-121 named Clipper Maid of the Seas—was destroyed by a bomb, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew members.[1] Eleven people in Lockerbie, southern Scotland, were killed as large sections of the plane fell in and around the town, bringing total fatalities to 270. As a result, the event has been named by the media as the Lockerbie Bombing."
"On 31 January 2001, Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi, a Libyan, was convicted of involvement in the bombing and sentenced to life imprisonment in Scotland. On 21 August 2009, the Scottish Government released him on compassionate grounds to return to Libya as he was suffering from terminal prostate cancer and had a life expectancy of less than three months."
"indictments for murder were issued on 13 November 1991 against Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi, a Libyan intelligence officer and the head of security for Libyan Arab Airlines (LAA), and Lamin Khalifah Fhimah, the LAA station manager in Luqa Airport, Malta.
