Superman,

RE: The great Boerseun vs Mats007 Battle of the Wits.

I took the liberty to move this to a new thread, since Mats007 does not feature anymore.

I'm still waiting for your question. I'm curious as hell!

Or is there a naggeling doubt in your mind that I may give the CORRECT answer.??

Pleeeeze give your question. This site can do with a bit of positive, intellectual arguing. I promise to keep Politics,Racism and Personal Attacks out of this thread. Really.....call it a one time truce, valid for this thread and this thread ONLY. I will ignore anybody else's contributions, only reply to yours.

The question you had about "what fuel do you use in your area" tells me this is going to be fun. Fire away, and lets engage in a problem "worthy of any engineer"

Sorry Boost-Seun I am running around to meet all my deadlines before my deserved leave commenced therefore I have got little time for the net. Since you are eager for the problem which is fuelled by your suspicious and curiosity hereunder is the question that can test your technical general knowledge. It is based on an approved and currently working similar project.

Let’s say empty waste cool drink cans are dumped at unbearable rate in your area and your local dumping site cannot accommodate them any longer. Your town Municipality gave you a tender to recycle those extra tins. You decide to design a Metal Melting Furnace that can melt 3 kg of Cans material per load. Melted metal can now be mould into a lot of shapes that can be useful in other ways. The tins have to be squeezed into the crucible so that they occupy the whole total inside volume. Furnace efficiency is 75%. The Furnace is been fired with Diesel and the blower is used to supply 20% of air in access to avoid incomplete combustion.

Here are the can’s material properties:

Melting point: 660.4 degree Celsius.
Density at room temp: 2.703 g/cm3
Specific heat: 0.95 KJ/Kg
Latent heat: 400 KJ/Kg

Here are the fuel properties:

Avarage Diesel chemical formula C12H23
1 kg of the fuel gives 194040 Kcal (or 46200 KJ)

Questions
1. Find the volume of the crucible.
2. Find the Total energy required to melt 3 kg of cans
3. Balance the Diesel combustion equation
4. Find total numbers of fuel moles required to melt 3 kg of cans
5. Find total mass of nitrogen through the exhaust at 20 % excess air.
6. Find the Price of the fuel per load at the current local cost

Notes:

Room temp can be taken as 21 degree Celsius
Each kg of Oxygen in the air is mixed with 3.76 kg of Nitrogen

Good One!

Just to clarify a few things:

a) "The tins have to be squeezed into the crucible so that they occupy the whole total inside volume" - I take this to mean that there is ABSOLUTELY NO empty spaces inside the 3kg of crushed tins, i.e. the tins are in effect "cold forged" into a solid block that weighs 3kg? (is this technically possible? )

b) "6. Find the Price of the fuel per load at the current local cost" - I take it that you want the cost of the DIESEL only, and not the fuel/energy required to run the blower as well, since you did not specify energy use of the blower? (Presumably electric)

I will start my calculations on the above assumptions.

BTW - this question goes beyond "general" technical knowledge. In fact, it is a uni graduate level engineering problem!! There is certain similarities between this an certain Ballistic calculations (energy values of explosives at certain mass/volume expansion ratios etc) Since my knowledge of explosives and gun / artillery propellents is extensive, I will use that knowledge to solve this problem.

Tough, but nice. Thanks.

I'm also busy as hell - my business closes Friday for the holidays. But I will work on this tonight, and post my reply tomorrow or Friday.

>Of course the crucible must have a clearence space at the top, but the volume required to be calculated is technically the level of the metals if allowed to cool down after it was melted.

>Yes it is the cost of the diesel that used to fire the furnace only and it should be different if the furnace is used in Walvis Bay to the one used in Katima Mulilo, I mean if you buy the fuel from their respective Service Stations.

Boostseun did I press your "mute" button or you just decided not to wash yo dirty linens in public or will you accuse "leave" as your excuse while in actually fact you are running around asking your technical friends if they know the answers?! Just acknowledge the fact that you (maybe) cannot answer those questions then I can post them answers here.
